Lovell's Story: From Ranching Roots to Rose Town Charm

Lovell’s history unfolds like a captivating tale. In 1887, cattlemen Henry Clay Lovell and Anthony Mason arrived in the Big Horn Basin, establishing the M-L Ranch. By 1890, a small settlement sprouted near the present-day town center. Recognizing the need for a post office, Mr. Lovell leveraged his influence to bring this crucial service to the community. As a tribute, the town was named in his honor.

The community continued to grow with ranchers settling along nearby rivers and creeks. A significant turning point came in 1900 when a large Mormon colony arrived in the lower Shoshone Valley. Their expertise in irrigation systems fueled the town’s development and led to the establishment of thriving communities.

A Town Takes Shape

The desire for official incorporation led to an election on October 5, 1906. J. A. Harris, Richard C. May, and Robert J. Bischoff served as election inspectors, witnessing the overwhelming support for incorporation – 42 votes in favor, with none against. George W. Johnson became the first mayor, joined by council members M. David Harris, Frederick H. Ostler, Elias Johnson, and Alma Peterson. Interestingly, some questioned the legality of the incorporation process, leading to a second attempt in May 1909. However, a 1968 lawsuit confirmed the validity of the 1906 incorporation, solidifying Lovell’s official status.

Years later, Dr. William Horsley, arriving in 1924, became a pillar of the community, serving as the town doctor for many years. A passionate horticulturist, Dr. Horsley’s love for roses earned Lovell the endearing nickname, “The Rose Town of Wyoming.”
